Men's Soccer Tops Trinity Baptist at Home

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team moved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Trinity Baptist College at Gyrene Field on Friday afternoon. The Gyrenes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, saw that lead disappear, but then claimed victory on an unusual second half tally.

Kaveon Dux propelled Ave Maria to their 2-0 lead with two goals in 20 seconds in the 25th minute. Dux opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, placed on his foot on a pass from Raphael Rodriguez. Just 20 seconds later, Greg Lawrence found Dux again, and the transfer buried a rocket in the top of the net to increase Ave Maria's lead to two goals.

Trinity Baptist battled back with a goal less than four minutes later, as Joseph Nava beat the Gyrene goalkeeper for the first TBC goal of the match. The final 16:25 of the first half proceeded without further scoring, giving AMU a 2-1 at halftime. Less than 90 seconds into the second half, Nava scored on a free kick from just outside the box, tying the score at two.

Ave Maria's game-winner came in bizarre fashion, as the Eagles put the ball in the back of their own net in the 58th minute. An attempt from Gyrene freshman Donte Powell was redirected into the net by a Trinity Baptist defender, giving AMU a 3-2 lead on the own goal. The Gyrenes maintained the 3-2 lead for the remainder of the match, aided by a 62nd minute red card that allowed Ave to play 11-on-10 for the remainder of the match.

The two teams played an evenly matched contest, with Trinity Baptist outshooting the Gyrenes 14-13. It was a physical contest as well, with 22 fouls committed and six cards handed out, including one red.

AMU begins a five game road trip on Saturday night, when the Gyrenes take on St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. During the five games away from Ave Maria, the Gyrenes will face two NCAA Division II opponents (Eckerd and Nova Southeastern), two Sun Conference opponents in non-league matches (St. Thomas and Florida Memorial), and will play a neutral site affair against Missouri Baptist.

Kickoff of Ave Maria's tilt with the St. Thomas Bobcats is scheduled for 7:00 p.m, and will be the first of two meetings between the schools this season.
