Women's Soccer Falls to Warner

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 setback to the Warner University Royals on Monday afternoon at Gyrene Field. The game was delayed just over an hour due to inclement weather in the Southwest Florida region.

The Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. In the 11th minute, Betina Gerhardt struck for Warner, scoring on an assist from Brooke Bloomel. Lexi Garcia added to the Royals' tally in the 20th minute, scoring her second goal of the season.

Warner extended their lead to 3-0 before the end of the first half, as Emma Marshal found the back of the net on a long pass from Denise Ortiz. Marshal's goal was her first of the season, and came with less than five minutes remaining in the period.

Two goals in under three minutes early in the second half finished the scoring for Warner. Gerhardt scored her second goal of the match in the 49th minute, and Rachel Deweerd added a goal less than three minutes later, in the 52nd minute.

Amanda Stacy stopped eight shots in net for the Gyrenes, who were outshot 18-6 by the visiting Royals. Four different Gyrenes provided the teams' shots on goal, with Sarah McBride serving as the only AMU player to take multiple shots.

Ave Maria returns to action on the road on Wednesday, as the Gyrenes travel to Palm Beach Atlantic University. Kickoff against the NCAA Division II foe is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
