Box Score THOMASVILLE, Ga.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 setback to the Night Hawks of Thomas University on Saturday afternoon in a Sun Conference match. The Night Hawks moved to 1-0 in league play with the win, while the Gyrenes fell to 0-1-1.
The Night Hawks jumped on top in the eighth minute, as Sam Eyes found Rene Rivera for his second goal of the season. Eyes then stuck for a goal of his own in the 37th minute, giving Thomas a 2-0 advantage off an assist from Joao Victor Felix. A goal just over three minutes later, in the 40th minute, from Y'sef Glass provided the Night Hawks with a 3-0 edge heading into halftime.
Thomas would score twice more in the second half to account for the final score. Glass scored his second goal of the game in the 59th minute, with S. Marin providing the assist. In the 69th minute, Gavin Rochford-Smith concluded the scoring with his fourth goal of the season.
Ave Maria was outshot 15-3 in the contest, including 9-1 in the shots on goal category. John Gokey attempted AMU's lone shot on goal, and goalkeeper Andrea Salomone provided four saves in the losing effort. The teams combined for 20 fouls during the match, and three yellow cards were handed out. It marked just the second time in eleven matches this season where the Gyrenes have been unable to score.
The Gyrenes will return home on Wednesday for their third Sun Conference match of the season. The Johnson and Wales University Wildcats will come to Gyrene Field, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The match, which will start a stretch of four of the team's next five matches coming at home, will be the first to take advantage of the newly installed lights at Gyrene Field.
