AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team played the first contest under the brand new lights at Gyrene Field on Wednesday night, hosting the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University. Johnson and Wales scored four goals in the second half en route to a 5-1 victory over the host Gyrenes.
The Wildcats scored the opening goal of the match in the 12th minute. Patricio Rolon scored on a give-and-go from Fernando Arzeno, beating the AMU goalkeeper to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. Neither team scored in the final 33 minutes of the first half, keeping Johnson and Wales' 1-0 lead intact heading into the halftime break.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Rolon struck again to increase the Wildcats' lead. On an assist from Valentin Salinas, Rolon scored his second goal of the night to give JWU a 2-0 edge in the 49th minute. Goals from Arzeno and Salinas less than six minutes apart, in the 74th and 80th minutes, increased Johnson and Wales' lead to 4-0 in the second half.
Ave Maria got on the board in the 85th minute on an own goal. A good cross from the Gyrenes found the foot of Donte Powell, whose attempted shot was deflected into the net by a Johnson and Wales defender. It was the second own goal that went the way of the Gyrenes this season. Franco Molina completed the scoring in the 89th minute, capping JWU's 5-1 win.
Powell was Ave Maria's most active attacker in the losing effort, logging three shots and one shot on goal. Johnson and Wales outshot the Gyrenes 17-13, and put nine shots on goal to AMU's six. The two teams played a physical contest, with 26 fouls and three yellow cards handed out during the match's 90 minutes.
The Gyrenes have a week off before their next match, which will come on the road at Webber International University. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff in Babson Park.
