Gyrenes Narrowly Fall to NCAA D2 Foe

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team played an even match with NCAA Division II foe Nova Southeastern University on Thursday night, falling 1-0 to the Sharks on a goal in the 83rd minute. The Gyrenes stayed even with the Sharks for a majority of the match despite being outshot 31-1.

Ave Maria goalkeeper Andrea Salomone stopped each of the Sharks' first ten shots on goal. In the Gyrenes' last two matches, the senior has saved 16 of the 17 shots against him, and has made at least six saves in four consecutive matches.

The lone shot for the Gyrenes came in the 54th minute, when a shot from Alex Wilcox was blocked. Conversely, the Sharks took 20 shots in the second half, but were held scoreless until their final attempt at the net. Nova Southeastern had 13 corner kick opportunities during the match, while the Gyrenes did not take any corner kicks.

Nova Southeastern's game-winner came with less than eight minutes to play in the match. On an assist from Ignacio Goya and Aleks Berg, Darwin Lom scored his second goal of the season. Lom's goal found the net from a tough angle off his left foot.

The final match of Ave Maria's five match roadtrip comes on Saturday, when the Gyrenes face Florida Memorial University. The non-conference affair is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. in Miami Gardens, after which AMU will return home to face Florida College on Tuesday afternoon at Gyrene Field.
