Gyrenes Cruise Past Trinity on Record Night

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday night, handily defeating Trinity College 94-56 at the Tom Golisano Field House. The victory marked a season sweep of the Tigers for AMU, who also claimed a 91-37 triumph in the season opener.

On a night where Sarah Miller was honored for scoring 1,000 career points at Ave Maria, the Gyrenes made a number of alterations to the program record book. Taylor Allen set a new school record with seven made three-pointers in the victory, and the Gyrene totals in points (94), field goals attempted (85), three-pointers made (13), and assists (29) all ranked in the top ten in single game school history.

A 21-0 run propelled the Gyrenes to a lead they would not relinquish in the first quarter. After a slow start where the Tigers and Gyrenes were even at six, Ave Maria proceeded to score the final 21 points of the opening frame. In the first ten minutes, AMU made six three-pointers, led by three triples from Allen. All six points for the Tigers were provided by Larissa Roker on two field goals and a pair of free throws.

The Gyrenes also scored the first 13 points of the second quarter, capping off a 34-0 run that spanned over eleven minutes of game time. A free throw from Mary Katherine Miller broke the AMU scoring streak, and a Candice Blackman three-pointer ended a Tiger drought of over 12 minutes without a field goal. At halftime, AMU held a 52-20 advantage over the Tigers.

Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the third quarter, with the Gyrenes outscoring Trinity 26-21. Allen continued to shoot the ball well from distance, making three more three-pointers to tie the school record with six. Trinity also hit three triples in the quarter, led by a pair from Candice Blackman. At the conclusion of the third quarter, the Gyrenes led 78-41.

In the fourth quarter, Allen knocked down her seventh three-pointer to set a new school record, and cap off a 23-point performance. Five different Gyrenes accounted for the 16 points put on the board in the frame, while Markenesja Hardy came alive for the Tigers in the final quarter, scoring ten of her 12 points and accounting for 66.7 percent of Trinity's offense.

Each of the twelve Gyrenes that entered the game recorded a field goal, led by 23 from Allen and 22 points and 17 rebounds from Miller. The double-double was the 18th of the season for Miller, tying Sandy Jenkins' school record set in 2012. Danielle Weinmann was also in double figures with eleven points, while Amanda Kasprzak narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds. Trinity's leading scorer was Blackman, who hit five three-pointers en route to a 17-point outing.

Ave Maria will go for their 20th win of the season on Saturday against a formidable foe, the fifth ranked Southeastern University Fire. The Fire have won 49 consecutive regular season conference games dating back to February 13, 2016. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Ave Maria as the opening game of a doubleheader.
