Defense Leads AMU To Win Over Webber

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria football team overcame rain and several miscues in their 13-0 win over Webber International on Saturday night. The Gyrene defense led the way, forcing three turnovers and earning their first shutout since October 3, 2015.

With rain coming down hard in the first half, points were at a premium. The Gyrenes struck first when Kristian Marks capped a five-play, 69-yard drive with a 36-yard touchdown run. Derek and Devyn McCormick each hit field goals as time expired in the second and third quarters, respectively, to wrap up all the scoring on the night.

The Gyrenes held a 10-0 lead at halftime despite three first-half interceptions and two first-half missed field goals. On the night, AMU missed four field goals.

Marks finished 8-for-20 on the night with 79 passing yards. He ran the ball 12 times for 75 yards. Quino Mauricette had 79 rushing yards on 18 attempts as AMU surpassed 200 yards on the ground.

The Gyrene defense dominated the Warriors all night long. AMU forced three turnovers, had five sacks, and five additional tackles for a loss. The Gyrenes held Webber to 171 yards of total offense and forced them to punt nine times. Webber was 0-for-1 in the red zone and turned the ball over on downs on their only red zone appearance.

Kobi Bowers had a team-best 11 total tackles. Savohn Hunt had nine total tackles with a sack and three tackles for a loss. Jaylyn Robinson and Destyn Campbell each had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks. Robinson also recovered a bad snap from Webber for the fumble recovery. Brady Stockard had five tackles and a sack. Jordan Barrow and Dylan Bryan each had an interception for the Gyrenes.

Devyn McCormick had four punts for an average of 41.5 yards and placed two inside the Webber 20-yardline to help switch field position. With AMU leading 10-0 early in the third quarter, McCormick made a great play to pick up a low snap and elude the Webber rush. His left-footed rugby kick rolled to the Webber 25-yard line on a play that could have set up Webber deep in AMU territory.

Ave Maria is back in action next weekend when they take on St. Thomas in Miami Gardens. The game played at Monsignor Edward Pace HS will kick-off at 12 p.m.
