Volleyball Falls 3-1 At Florida Memorial

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team fell on the road on Saturday afternoon to conference foe Florida Memorial. The two teams entered the day a game apart in the conference standings with FMU holding the fourth spot.
 
Florida Memorial took an early 6-2 lead in the opening set and led 13-9 near the midway point. The Gyrenes responded with an eight-point run to take a 17-13 lead. The run came on Victoria Schein's serve and McKenna Tyson had three kills during the run. With AMU leading 20-15, Florida Memorial won 10 of the next 11 points to win the set 25-21.
 
The two teams went back-and-forth for most of the second set. A 4-1 run by AMU put the Gyrenes in front 8-7. With AMU in front 12-11, the Lions went on a 7-1 run to take a 18-13 advantage. AMU battled back and tied the match at 24 with a 5-1 spurt. After an FMU point gave the Lions a set point, three straight from AMU gave the Gyrenes the set 27-25.
 
Florida Memorial jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and led 17-6 later in the set. The Lions closed the set on a 7-1 run to take the set 25-10 and take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Lions led for most of the fourth set. After the Gyrenes cut into the FMU lead and pulled to within two, 16-14, the Lions won six straight points to take control of the set 22-14. The Lions went on to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
 
Tyson led the Gyrenes with 12 kills and 10 digs. Alejandra Suarez had 15 digs followed by 13 from Schein. Katie Grose had 8 kills and 31 assists.
 
AMU hit .136 on the night with 43 kills and 23 attack errors. AMU had seven service errors and one ace.
 
Ave Maria drops to 9-10 on the season and to 4-6 in Sun Conference play. The Gyrenes return to action on Wednesday when they host Southeastern at 7 p.m.
