Women's Soccer Falls Just Short

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team held the Warner University Royals scoreless for the final 82 minutes of Saturday afternoon's match at Gyrene Field, but could not come up with an equalizer in a 1-0 defeat in Sun Conference play. Ave Maria has lost three matches this season by a one-goal margin.

Warner's goal came in the eighth minute of the match, and would prove to be the only offense of the day. A pass from the far corner from Brooke Blommel found the foot of Lexi Garcia, who placed the ball into the net for her second goal of the season. Blommel's assist accounted for her first pass to a score during the 2019 campaign.

Ave Maria did outshoot the Royals in the losing effort, 9-6, but Warner held a 5-2 advantage in shots in goal. AMU goalkeeper Amanda Stacy stopped four of the five shots that were on target, while her counterpart, Mackenzie Spurling, stopped two shots on goal to post the shutout.

Haley Iacona led the Gyrenes with three shots attempted, while Meghan Precord and Caylee Feskanin each added two attempts. Iacona and Haley Ewing were responsible for AMU's two shots on goal in the losing effort.

The next contest for the Gyrenes is scheduled for Wednesday night, when the Bobcats of St. Thomas University are on the docket. Opening kickoff at Gyrene Field in Ave Maria is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
