WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team ran up against the No. 1 team in the nation on Wednesday afternoon, travelling to West Palm Beach for a meeting with the Keiser University Seahawks. Top-ranked Keiser claimed a 12-1 victory at Arrigo-Vecellio Field in a Sun Conference matchup, but a goal from Meghan Precord got the Gyrenes their first goal against the Seahawks since 2015.
First Team All-American Matilda Ovenberger was the leading catalyst of the Seahawk attack, scoring four goals in the opening 23 minutes of the match, and adding another with under a minute to play. Alicia Drott added two goals and an assist for Keiser, and Kyoka Koshijma scored two goals of her own. One goal each was scored by Emma Holmskov, Maja Lundman, and  Maja Henriksson.
Ave Maria broke through for their first goal in just over 700 minutes in the 78th minute of the match. On an assist from Haley Iacona, the senior captain Precord found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Precord's goal, which moved her into a tie for seventh in school history in points and ninth in goals scored, was AMU's first goal since their 10-0 victory over Talladega in the season opener, and marked the first goal against the perrenial power Seahawks since the 2015 meeting. In ten games this season, it was just the fourth goal surrendered by Keiser.
For the first time since September 11, the Gyrenes will return home on Wednesday, October 9 for a conference meeting with the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University. The Wildcats won a non-conference matchup between the teams, 4-0, in North Miami on September 21. Kickoff at Gyrene Field in Ave Maria is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
