Volleyball Tops Conference Leading Coastal Georgia In Three

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team defeated The Sun Conference leading Coastal Georgia Mariners in straight sets on Saturday afternoon to improve to 10-11 overall and to 5-7 in TSC play. The Mariners fall to 16-7 overall and to 9-3 against conference opponents.  Ave Maria moves into a tied for fifth place in the conference with the win, the top six will qualify for the conference tournament.
 
McKenna Tyson led the Gyrenes with a team-high 11 kills and three service aces. Madelyn Haut had nine kills and Alejandra Suarez added seven kills. AMU hit .202 on the afternoon and committed just 13 attack errors over the three sets.
 
Katie Grose finished with 34 assists, seven digs, and five block assists. Erica Chenard had six block assists for AMU. Libero Victoria Schein led the Gyrenes with 18 digs.
 
Ave Maria hit .350 in the first set with 16 kills and two errors to take the first set 25-20. After CCGA took a 6-32 lead, a 6-1 run by AMU gave the Gyrenes a 9-7 lead. The back-and-forth game continued later in the set with the lead changing three times and the game being tied 10 times in the set. With AMU trailing by one, the Gyrenes won five points on Tyson's serve, including two aces, to take a 22-18 advantage. After two straight points by the Mariners, Ave Maria won the final three points to win the set 25-20.
 
Coastal Georgia led most of the second set, taking their largest lead of the set at 17-12 after four-straight points. AMU faught back and four-straight cut the deficit to one, 18-17. After three straight by CCGA, Ave Maria won five in a row to take a 22-21 lead. Similar to the opening set, AMU closed out the set with three straight points to win the set 25-22.
 
The Gyrenes broke open the third set on the serve of McKenzie McKay. Trailing by one, when McKay come up to serve, the Gyrenes won the next seven points to take a 10-4 lead. Coastal Georgia began to cut into the AMU lead and pulled to within one, 13-12, midway through the set. The Gyrenes continued to be aggressive and were able to maintain their lead before a four-point spurt put AMU in front 22-16. Ave Maria went on to win 25-19.
 
Ave Maria returns to action on Wednesday when they take on St. Thomas in Miami Gardens. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
