HARDEEVILLE, S.C.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team played the final match of their 2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-0 decision on the road to the SCAD-Savannah Bees. SCAD scored twice in the second half to earn their fifth conference win of the season and ensure a top four seed in The Sun Conference Tournament.
The first half was played to a standstill, with neither team putting the ball in the back of the net. Both teams attempted five shots in the opening 45 minutes, with three of SCAD's shots and one of Ave Maria's shots going on goal.
SCAD's scoring barrage in the second half started just 36 seconds into the frame. Ty Bennett scored on an assist from Jesus Ulloa in the 46th minute, then added another goal in the 76th minute, this one unassisted. The Bees completed the scoring with 40 seconds left on the clock, as Bennett made it a hat trick with Nassim El Bouhtouri picking up the assist.
The Bees recorded 13 shots in the second half, while the Gyrenes had six. The major difference in the final 45 minutes of the match came in shots on goal, as just one AMU shot challenged the keeper as opposed to seven for the host Bees.
Cedric Georges and Ulises Soto led the Gyrene attack in the losing effort, with each player recording three shots. The two shots on goal during the match for AMU were provided by Georges and Raphael Rodriguez. In his final game of the season, Ian Wall made seven saves for the Gyrenes in net.
The match marks the end of the 2019 season for the Gyrenes, who earned victories over conference opponent Webber International and the University of the Virgin Islands during the campaign.
