AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team concluded the 2019 season on Saturday, falling 3-1 to the visiting Bees of SCAD-Savannah. Before the home finale, the Gyrenes honored the five members of their senior class - Emily Dalton, Brianna Houghram, Clare Jordan, Hannah Lawrence, and Meghan Precord.
The first goal of the morning was provided by the Bees in the ninth minute of the match. SCAD's Sam Manelis, the team's leading goalscorer, broke through the Gyrene defense, and buried her 12th goal of the season to give the Bees a 1-0 lead.Â
One of AMU's seniors provided an equalizer in the 22nd minute. Ave Maria played a ball into the attacking third, and a header from Jessica Martinez found the foot of Meghan Precord, who scored her sixth goal of the season in her final match as a Gyrene. The goal was the tenth of Precord's career, making her just the seventh player in program history to score ten goals. Precord finishes her AMU career sixth in goals scored, sixth in points, and second in assists.
Neither team would score in the final 22 minutes of the first half, keeping the match level at halftime.
SCAD would score twice in the second half to secure their sixth conference win of the season. Manelis scored the eventual game-winner in the 56th minute on an assist from Natalia Zapata. Zapata then provided a goal of her own in the 60th minute, scoring on an assist from Riley Shelton.Â
In total, SCAD outshot the Gyrenes 36-5 in the regular season finale, including a 18-3 edge in shots on goal. Other than the goal from Precord, Lawrence and Haley Iacona provided shots on goal for the Gyrenes. Manelis was the game's most consistent attacker, logging ten total shots and seven shots on goal.
AMU goalkeeper Amanda Stacy made 15 saves in the finale, raising her season total to 64. Stacy's goal against average of 2.32 over 855 minutes this season ranks second in single-season school history, and is the best since Jackie Gonzalez in 2011.Â
