AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team improved to 6-0 on the season with an 80-30 win over Trinity Baptist on Saturday afternoon. The Gyrenes jumped out to a 53-10 halftime lead and never looked back.
Danielle Weinmann led a balanced effort for the Gyrenes with 14 points and five rebounds in 21 minutes. Sarah Miller had 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Syanne Rowe and Monica Behrend also finished in double-figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. In total, 12 different Gyrenes found the scoring column and 14 picked up a rebound.
Ave Maria shot 53 percent in the first half and held the Eagles to 14 percent over the first 20 minutes to jump out to the large first half lead. AMU ended the game at 41 percent while TBC finished at 20 percent.
Tied at two just over a minute into the game, Ave Maria rattled off 13 straight points to take a 15-2 lead. An 11-0 run followed for the Gyrenes as AMU built a 32-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Gyrene defense held Trinity Baptist to 1-of-13 shooting in the second quarter and to just three points in the frame. The Eagles had one point in the quarter before a layup with 21 seconds remaining. AMU outscored the Eagles 21-3 in the quarter to take a 53-10 lead into halftime.
Ave Maria got everyone involved in the second half. Sophia Kramer led AMU over the final 20 minutes with seven points and four rebounds. The Gyrenes outscored Trinity Baptist 16-7 in the third while TBC held a 13-11 edge in the fourth.
The Blue and Green dominated in bench points, 37-6, and held a 38-16 edge in the paint. AMU forced 22 turnovers that turned into 30 Gyrene points.
Ave Maria is 5-0 all-time against Trinity Baptist and are averaging nearly 79 points against the Eagles in those wins. Today's game was the first time the two teams have played since the 2014-15 season.
The Gyrenes return to action on Tuesday when they host Florida National on Disney Night. Fans are encouraged to wear blue as Disney music will be played throughout the night. The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
