Gyrene Women Pull Away from Webber

BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon, earning their eleventh win of the season in a 63-50 victory over the Webber International University Warriors at the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Gyrenes moved to 4-1 in Sun Conference play with the victory in their last league game until 2020.

Webber led for much of the first quarter, as the Warriors held a 16-13 advantage after the opening ten minutes. After the Warriors scored the first four points of the game, neither team led by more than three points for the remainder of the period. Danielle Weinmann scored five of AMU's 13 points in the quarter to keep the Gyrenes within striking distance.

The second quarter was marked by a pair of runs. Webber started the quarter on a 7-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at eight, 23-15. That lead would be equalled at 25-17 just under two minutes later. The Gyrenes then took control in the final four minutes of the first half, as Ave Maria ended the frame on a 15-2 run. Sarah Miller scored the final four points of the quarter to give AMU a 32-27 lead at halftime.

Despite being outrebounded 24-18 in the first half, a balanced scoring effort allowed Ave to hold a lead at the break. Four Gyrenes scored at least five points in the first 20 minutes, led by nine points from Miller. Taylor Allen added six points, while Weinmann and Amanda Kasprzak each scored five. Webber was led by Paris Copeland, who had ten points.

The Warriors rallied in the third quarter, taking the lead on several occasions. Webber's latest lead in third came at the 4:35 mark, when a layup from Taniya Patrick gave the Warriors a 39-37 lead. The final 4:35 of the quarter was dominated by Miller, who scored seven of Ave Maria's nine points to reclaim the lead, 46-43, heading into the fourth quarter.

Ave Maria's defense clamped down on Webber in the fourth quarter, as the Warriors managed just seven points in the final ten minutes. AMU started the quarter on three-pointers from Weinmann and Allen, extending their lead to nine points. The Gyrene lead would not get any lower than six in the final frame, as AMU pulled away for win number eleven on the season.

Miller once again led the Gyrenes, as the senior scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Miller, who entered the day as the NAIA leader in offensive rebounds per game, grabbed six more in the victory. The remainder of Ave Maria's scoring was balanced - nine each from Weinmann and Allen, eight from Syanne Rowe, and seven from Kasprzak.

The Gyrenes will take the next 13 days off before playing in the Daytona Beach Shootout on December 20 and 21. Both AMU games at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach will be exhibitions against NCAA Division II programs. The Shootout begins with a meeting against Grand Valley State on the 20th, with tipoff scheduled for noon.
