MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team fell on the road to Florida Memorial 75-71 on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game, it had already been decided based on earlier results that AMU would be the four-seed in the upcoming Sun Conference Tournament and would host Florida Memorial on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round.
The Gyrenes shot 49 percent from the field on the afternoon and made 10 threes. Florida Memorial shot 38 percent and made nine threes. FMU held a 20-9 advantage in made free throws and a 20-16 edge in points off turnovers.
Sarah Miller led the Gyrenes with 16 points and six rebounds. Katie Houbolt had 15 points and four made threes. Taylor Allen also made four from behind the arc and 12 points.
Florida Memorial jumped out to the early lead and led 20-13 after one quarter of play. AMU responded in the second quarter and used a 9-2 run over the final 3:30 of the half to cut the deficit to one, 32-31, at the break.
The game went back-and-forth in the third with the lead changing six times. Florida Memorial held the largest lead in the third quarter, a five-point lead with 23 seconds remaining. A Sarah Miller jumper in the closing second made it a 49-46 game heading to the fourth.
After FMU pushed the lead to six in the early stages of the fourth, Ave Maria responded with a 13-4 run to take a three point lead, 62-59. AMU led by as many as five with 2:20 to play but three scores in a row by the Lions, a three, layup, and another three, gave FMU a one-point lead with 1:05 remaining. Florida Memorial made three of their four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
The two teams will meet again on Tuesday at the Tom Golisano FH in the quarterfinals of The Sun Conference Tournament. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
