Tennis vs. St. Thomas Recap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's and women's tennis teams took on St. Thomas in their final home match of the season on Wednesday afternoon. The Gyrene men's team defeated the Bobcats 5-4 while the women's team fell 8-1. Prior to the match, AMU recognized their graduating seniors.
 
On the men's side, Brandon Valley and Cesar Menacho got the Gyrenes on the board first with a 8-2 win at three-doubles. Jonathan Althoff and TJ Fischer made it 2-0 AMU with a 9-7 win at two-doubles. David Zuleta and Nicholas Hofmeister nearly made it a clean sweep of doubles but fell at the first position 9-7.
 
In singles play, St. Thomas won at three-singles and at one-singles to take a 3-2 overall lead. AMU responded with wins as two-singles by Hofmeister (7-6 (7), 7-5) and six-singles by Valley (6-3, 6-3). Davin Hanton clinched the match for AMU at four-singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
 
For the AMU women's team, St. Thomas took the first two-doubles points before AMU got on the board at one-doubles with a 8-5 win by Camilla Branstner and Averie Harkie. The Bobcats swept singles play to win the match 8-1.
 
The AMU men's team returns to action on Friday with an exhibition against ASA College in Miami. Both teams take on Eckerd on Monday, April 8.
