Georgetown Tops Lacrosse In Kentucky

GEORGETOWN, Ky. --- The Ave Maria women's lacrosse team began their trip in Kentucky with a 18-10 setback to eighth-ranked Georgetown on Friday evening. The Gyrenes conclude the regular season on Sunday when they take on third-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) at 2 p.m.
 
Ave Maria jumped out to an early lead with three goals in the opening seven minutes. Emma Davis, Aiyanah Simms, and Alexis Smich each tallied goals to make it 3-0 AMU. Georgetown responded with three goals of their own over the next four minutes to even up the match.
 
Simms broke the 3-3 tie with a goal at the 20:09 mark off a pass from Katelyn Sherman.
 
Georgetown ended the half by scoring five of the next six goals to take a 8-5 lead into the break. The goal by AMU came from Smich with 8:53 to play in the first.
 
A Sherman goal brought the Gyrenes to within two, 8-6, early in the second half before a pair of goals by the Tigers pushed their advantage back to four.
 
Stephanie Hilker found the back of the net with 14:21 to play to cut the AMU deficit to three. Georgetown ended the game on a 6-2 run to pull away from the Gyrenes.
 
Smich added her third goal of the game late in the second while Davis found the back of the net for the second time with just over seven minutes to play.
 
Georgetown held a slight advantage in shots on goal, turnovers, and ground balls. The Tigers had a 20-10 lead in draw controls.
 
Simms and Smich led AMU with three goals apiece while Davis also finished with multiple scores. Sherman had one goal and two assists to finish with three points. Smich led AMU with five ground balls and Davis gathered a team-best six draw controls.
 
Kaylee Wesolowski made 10 saves for AMU in goal.
