Lacrosse Season Ends in Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.- The Ave Maria University lacrosse team saw their season come to an end on Thursday afternoon, as the Gyrenes fell 13-12 in overtime to Georgetown College. Ave Maria rallied from a four goal deficit to force the extra period, but could not advance in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Georgetown advances to the conference semifinals, where they will take on host University of the Cumberlands.

After Ave Maria took the lead less than 90 seconds into the matchup, Georgetown responded with three consecutive goals from three different players to take a 3-1 lead. Goals from Katelyn Sherman and Aiyanah Simms tied the game at three, but the Tigers proceeded to score the final three goals of the first half to take a 6-3 edge into the halftime break.

A Georgetown goal gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the game at 7-3 before consecutive goals from Alexis Smich, Simms, and Sherman pulled the Gyrenes within one. Avery Blackmon then scored back-to-back goals for Georgetown, but Simms answered with two of her own to again cut the Tiger lead to one, 9-8.

For the next 15 minutes, the Gyrenes and Tigers would trade goals, keeping the Georgetown lead at either one or two goals. Simms scored two of the three goals in the stretch for Ave Maria, while Georgia Miller added the other goal. Blackmon scored twice for Georgetown in the same timeframe, with the other goal netted by Alyssa Case.

In her final game, Sherman then scored the game-tying goal with 1:41 to play, tying the matchup at 12. Both teams would have opportunities to score in regulation, but could not find the back of the net before overtime. In overtime, Georgetown avoided a scoring opportunity from the Gyrenes before Case scored the game-winner 2:04 into the overtime period. Blackmon, who scored six goals to lead the Tigers, assisted on the game-winning goal.

Simms scored seven goals in the losing effort, tying an Ave Maria record for goals in a game. The sophomore also added five ground balls, a team-best. Sherman scored three goals and led Ave Maria with eight draw controls. Defensively, Miller, Smich, and Emma Davis each caused two turnovers, and Kaylee Wesolowski stopped eight shots and recorded five ground balls.

The Gyrenes conclude the 2019 season with five wins, a mark that ties for the second most in school history.
