AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the Barons of Brewton-Parker College at Gyrene Field in front of a large crowd of incoming AMU freshmen. Brewton-Parker's Jordan Hall scored the game-winning goal on the final kick of the match, giving the Barons a win in regulation in a game that otherwise would have gone to overtime.
Hall's game-winner came as an attempted clearance by the Gyrenes failed to send the ball down the field. With under five seconds to play, the ball wound up at the feet of Hall, who sent it into the back of the net to decide the contest.
Each of Brewton-Parker's first eight shots on goal were turned away by sophomore Amanda Stacy, who made several key stops to keep Ave Maria in the game. Brewton-Parker's Maygan La stopped five Gyrene shots to pick up the shutout victory in the first win of the season for the Barons.Â
Of Ave Maria's five shots on goal, two were provided by sophomore Laura Spence. Spence was the only AMU player to attempt more than one shot on the day. Three Barons recorded two shots on goal - Kadisha Martina, Mackenzie Stewart, and Michele Benitez-Marquez.
Meghan Precord, Kelsey Samaroo, and Marguerite Estes provided the other three attempts on net for the Gyrenes. In total, Brewton-Parker outshot the Gyrenes 12-8, and put four more shots on goal (9-5) during the 90 minutes.
AMU's next home contest will come on Thursday night against Florida College at Gyrene Field. The matchup is part of another men's and women's doubleheader, with kickoff of the women's game set for 5:00 p.m. The men's team will face Briar Cliff University from Iowa in the nightcap, which is set to kick off following the conclusion of the women's game.
