AMU Volleyball Beats Florida College

Box Score AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University volleyball team logged their second victory of the 2019 season on Tuesday night with a 27-29, 25-14, 26-24, 25-18 victory over the Falcons of Florida College. The win was the first in school history for the Gyrenes over the Falcons, breaking a losing streak of 14 consecutive matches dating back to 2008.

The opening set was closely contested between the two teams, with the score never leaning more than three points in either team's favor. The Gyrenes staved off a set point at 24-23, and appeared to have won the set on an ace from Miah Pena. However, a rotation error nullified the winning point, and the Falcons proceeded to score three points in a row after trailing 27-26 to claim a 29-27 triumph.

Ave Maria rolled in the second set, claiming an easy 25-14 win to even the match at one set a piece. McKenna Tyson was the lynchpin of the Gyrene attack in the second set. The junior put away six kills in the second set, allowing the Gyrenes to completely control the action.

Florida College led for much of the third set, building substantial leads at several points. However, a resilient AMU team was able to rally, reeling off six points in a row to take a 24-23 lead. Erica Chenard was key during the comeback, as the Edmonton native had two huge blocks during the comeback. A kill from McKenna Tyson and a massive block from Chenard and Tyson put the set away, giving the Gyrenes a 2-1 lead with a 26-24 win.

After a dramatic victory in the third set, the Gyrenes rode that momentum to a eight-point victory in the fourth and final set. Ave Maria capitalized on several Florida College mistakes, and clinched the home victory on a kill from Madelyn Haut.

The Gyrenes return to the court on Wednesday night, and return to Sun Conference play against Southeastern University. Ave Maria will play two road conference matches this week, with contests against Southeastern and Coastal Georgia. First serve at The Furnace in Lakeland against the Fire is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
