Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime

BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday evening, losing 3-2 in overtime to the Warriors of Webber International University. The Gyrenes led 2-1 at the end of the first half, but surrendered a goal in the second half and another in overtime to fall in the non-conference tilt.

Webber jumped on top in the 15th minute, scoring on their first shot on goal of the afternoon. After a short pass from Ivan Bonanken, Orian Burzic buried a goal from just inside 20 yards to give the host Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

Ave Maria quickly responded, scoring two goals in the next 30 minutes. The first AMU goal came in the 39th minute. A one-touch shot from Eamon McQuade allowed the Gyrenes to tie the match with just over six minutes to play in the half.

Cameron Barford then gave Ave Maria the lead in the 44th minute. A cross from Cedric Georges came into the penalty box and found the foot of Barford, who buried the pass to the back of the net to give AMU the lead.

Matheus Gomes tied the match for the Warriors in the second half, providing the goal that would eventually force overtime. Ma Fernandez Sassoni dribbled through the AMU defense and found Gomes, who finished for the goal in the 62nd minute. Neither team would score in the final 28 minutes, sending the match to extra time.

The Warriors won the match just over five minutes into overtime. Ma Fernandez Sassoni provided his second assist of the match, finding Alvaro Nagel Diaz for the game-winner in the 96th minute of the match after he dribbled past several Gyrene defenders.

Between the two teams, 48 shots were attempted, with 20 going on target. The Gyrenes outshot the Warriors, 62-22, and held an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal. Kensley Jean Baptiste, Ulises Soto, and Alan Gonzalez each attempted five shots in the losing effort, while John Gokey led Ave Maria with three shots on goal.

AMU begins Sun Conference play next Saturday, when the Gyrenes travel to Miami Gardens for a meeting with the Lions of Florida Memorial University. The opening kickoff at Vizcaya Park is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
