Gyrene Volleyball Drops TSC Match-Up Against Warner

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Warner won the final three sets to win the match 3-2. The Gyrenes and the Royals each move to 2-4 on the season in conference play.
 
Flavia Rusterholz led AMU with 14 kills in fours sets played. Madelyn Haut had 13 kills. Katie Grose and Erica Chenard each tallied nine kills. Grose added a team-best 49 assists.
 
Miah Pena led four AMU players with double-digit digs with 20. Alejandra Suarez had 17 while Victoria Schein and Katie O'Donnell added 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
 
Trailing 8-7 in the first set, the Gyrenes won six straight points to take a 13-8 lead. AMU kept in control of the opening set and went on to win 25-19 to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Midway though the second set is when AMU made their move, five-straight points gave the Gyrenes a 13-10 lead. Later in the set, after Warner had tied the game, a run of four points gave AMU a 20-16 advantage. Trailing by one, 26-25, Ave Maria won three straight on three Warner errors to take the second set 28-26 and take a 2-0 lead.
 
Warner won the third and fourth sets, 25-19 and 25-23, to pull even in the match 2-2. In the fourth, AMU trailed most of the set but rallied to take the lead 22-21. Three straight by the Royals gave them set points, 24-22, and they went on to win the set 25-23.
 
In the deciding fifth set, Warner jumped out to a 6-2 lead. AMU responded with four points on Schein's serve. Tied at 10, Warner won four straight-points to take a 14-10 lead. The Gyrenes won two-straight points to pull within two, before Warner closed out the match 15-14.
 
The Gyrenes move to 5-8 overall and to 2-4 in Sun Conference play. AMU returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Johnson & Wales at 7 p.m. in North Miami.
