Breakthrough Fall Ends for Women's Soccer

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team saw their breakthrough fall season come to an end in The Sun Conference Tournament semifinals, as the Gyrenes fell 5-0 to the Keiser University Seahawks. AMU's 7-6 fall record includes three losses to the Seahawks, who are the defending national champions. Keiser advances to the conference title game on Friday against top-seeded Southeastern, who earned a 1-0 victory over USCB in the other semifinal.

Keiser scored their first goal of the afternoon in the seventh minute, when a shot from Madeleine Berghult connected from 25 yards out, following an assist from Linnea Axengren. Maja Lundman added a goal in the 23rd minute, beating the AMU defense and shooting to the far post. Keiser's lead increased to 3-0 on a goal from Alicia Drott, who scored on one touch following a pass from Axengren, who picked up her second assist of the day.

In the second half, Keiser added goals in the 49th and 62nd minutes. Maxi Krug scored on an assist from Larissa Weber just 3:23 into the second half, while Oline Sundgot concluded the day's scoring on an assist from Berghult with 29 minutes remaining in the match.

The Seahawks logged a total of 30 shots over the 90 minutes, while Ave Maria got two shots off against the Keiser defense. KU's shots were spread out throughout the game, as 16 were taken in the first half and 14 in the second half. Keiser also had nine corner kick opportunities, with seven coming in the first half.

Jeanine Sullivan took Ave Maria's lone shot on goal in the semifinals, while Emily Dalton added her 79th shot of the season. Maddie Samuelson, who was named Second Team All-Conference earlier in the day, made five saves for AMU. Three Seahawks attempted five shots  in the victory - Emma Holmskov, Weber, and Krug, who was the lone player to log three shots on goal. Amanda Ewald stopped the lone shot on goal for the Gyrenes to record a shutout.

Ave Maria concludes the fall season with a 7-6 record, setting school records for wins, winning percentage, conference standing, and conference wins. Due to the altered schedules of the 2020 NAIA season, all teams that competed in the fall, such as teams in The Sun Conference, will be eligible to play regular season games in the spring, when other conferences across the nation play their regular seasons.
