BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Ave Maria University men's golf team began their spring schedule on Monday, playing in the Tenth Annual Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational at the Brunswick Country Club. The Gyrenes were one of 16 teams competing on Monday, and enter the final round in 14th place. As a team, AMU is within ten shots of a spot in the top ten.
Jonah Manning was the top golfer for the Gyrenes, shooting a two-over 74. Manning enters the final round tied for 13th, and is just two shots back of the top ten. Also in the top half of the field from the Gyrenes was Gabriel DeCasas, who shot a six-over 78. DeCasas is currently tied for 34th in the field of 90 golfers, and is only three shots away from the top 20.
The Gyrenes' team score was rounded out by Roch Aubert and Thomas Baycroft. Aubert is currently tied for 55th place after shooting an 81, while Baycroft sits in 78th place following a 17-over 89. The Ave Maria fifth golfer in Brunswick is Michael Lis-Planells, who shot a 95.
Coastal Georgia holds the team lead after the first round, as the Mariners have a seven-shot lead over SCAD-Savannah. Two other Sun Conference programs - St. Thomas and USCB - round out the top four. Seven players are under par, led by Dawson Peters, who shot a six-under par 66. Peters holds a one-shot lead over Coastal Georgia's Eli Scott and Indiana East's Jake Miller entering Tuesday's final round.
Ave Maria will conclude the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational on Tuesday, and are scheduled to tee off at 7:57 a.m. at the Brunswick Country Club. The Gyrenes will look to climb in the team standings during their first event of the spring season, as five teams are within eight shots of AMU.Â
