Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team took on one of the best NCAA Division II teams in the nation on Tuesday, facing the eleventh-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights. The Gyrenes earned a point from the Division II powerhouse in singles play, but eventually took a 6-1 defeat overall.
Lynn earned victories at the number two and number three doubles spots to earn the first point of the afternoon. The Fighting Knights' Nicholas Cabrera and Robin Calais won 6-2 at the second doubles spot, while Diego Valant and Diego Gonzalez won 6-3. The top singles match between Lynn's Giovanni Araujo and William Ljungdtrom and Ave Maria's Nicholas Hofmeister and Henrque Pruner sat at 5-5 when the Knights won the doubes point.
Alejandro Viedma earned a victory in singles play for the Gyrenes, winning a thrilling three-set match, 3-6, 7-6, 14-12. Viedma battled off two match points in the match, and won back-to-back sets to knock off his Division II opponent. Nicholas Hofmeister nearly earned a victory of his own, falling 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 to Lynn's number one player. Hofmeister held a 7-3 lead in the final set, but fell victim to a surge from Lynn's Calais.
In the other singles matches, Lynn won in straight sets at the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth spots. The Fighting Knights moved to 4-0 on the season, while the Gyrenes will return to conference play this weekend.
Ave Maria will remain on the road this weekend, as the Gyrenes prepare for a conference match against the Royals of Warner University. Both the men's and women's teams will look for a conference victory against the Royals in Bartow. Opening serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
