Women's Tennis Takes First Ever Point from Keiser

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team took a point from the Keiser University Seahawks for the first time in school history on Wednesday afternoon, despite suffering a 6-1 loss to the No. 2 team in the nation. The Gyrenes earned a win in singles play for the first time, breaking a streak of 47 consecutive singles wins for Keiser against AMU.

In doubles action, Keiser won all three spots, led by a 6-4 win at the number one position by Lorene Foerste and Sarah Schaerer. Both Keiser's number two and number three teams won by a 6-2 score, with Dugleisy Linarez and Anais Gabriel's win at the number two spot clinching the doubles point for the Seahawks.

Lara Teodoro earned one of the most impressive wins of her AMU career, beating Keiser's Dugleisy Linarez to win at the number one spot. Teodoro, who remained undefeated in singles play against NAIA competition, won the first set 7-5, lost the second 6-4, and claimed victory with a 6-3 victory in the third set.

Keiser, who boasts three of the top ten ranked players in the nation, won all but one set in the remaining five matches. The exception was at the number three spot, where Gabrielle Benn won 6-4 in the first set before falling 6-1 and 6-0 in the last two sets. The number three match between Benn and Anais Ruyssen proved to be the clinching match for the nation's number two team.

Sun Conference play continues on Saturday, when the Gyrenes face another nationally-ranked team. The Fire of Southeastern University, who sit No. 21 in the newest NAIA Coaches' Poll, come to Ave Maria for a battle between the teams ranked third and fourth in The Sun Conference. Opening serve between AMU and Southeastern is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
