Tennis Teams Fall to D2 Power

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University tennis teams fell on Tuesday afternoon, as NCAA Division II Embry-Riddle claimed 7-0 victories in both men's and women's competition. The Embry-Riddle men's team entered play ranked No. 24 in the nation at the Division II level.

On the women's side, Embry-Riddle earned the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches, although the Gyrenes were competitive in each one. The number one team of Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto fell 6-4, the number three team of Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom dropped a 6-3 decision, and the Benn sisters (Amarlia and Gabrielle) lost 6-2.

In singles play, Teodoro was the lone Gyrene to earn a set victory, taking a 6-3 win in number one singles before falling in three sets. The number one match between Teodoro and Georgina Wood proved to provide the clinching point for the host Eagles.

The men's competition also featured a sweep in doubles play, although the Gyrenes were able to force a tiebreak at number two. The team of Felipe Amorim and Adriel Bousquet fell 7-6, even though the doubles point had already been decided.

Ave Maria's top performance in singles play came from Henrique Pruner, who won the second set at number six singles before falling in the third. Embry-Riddle's wins at number three, four, and one singles clinched the match for the nationally ranked squad.

Sun Conference play for both Gyrene tennis teams begins on Saturday, as Ave Maria hosts the College of Coastal Georgia at the AMU Tennis Facility. The opening serve for the conference opener is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
