ORLANDO, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team won their third consecutive match on Wednesday, cruising to a 4-1 victory over the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. The Gyrenes won the doubles point and three of the four completed singles matches to win their fourth match of the season.
Ave Maria won two of the three doubles matches to gain the advantage heading into singles play. AMU's top pair of Nicholas Hofmeister and Henrique Pruner captured a 6-4 win over the JCU team of Gustavo Garcia and Kevin Wacnik. The other victory came from Felipe Amorim and Adriel Bousquet, who won 6-4 at the number two spot. John Carroll's team of Andrew Triner and Parker Holyn avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at the number three spot.
Three straight set victories allowed the Gyrenes to clinch the match victory in singles play. Hofmeister rolled to a win at the number one spot, 6-2, 6-2, while Amorim did the same to his opponent at the number five spot. Despite a victory by Mark Beebe for JCU at the fourth position, Viedma clinched the match for the Gyrenes with a 7-6, 6-0 win at the number three spot.
In the other two matches, Carlos Thireau held a 7-5, 2-1 lead at the conclusion of the day at the number two spot. The match at the sixth position between Triner and AMU's Nicholas Schneider was just underway, with Triner holding a 2-1 lead in the first set.
After a day off on Thursday, the Gyrenes will face a major challenge in Lakeland on Friday. Ave Maria will face the eighth-ranked team in the nation, the Point University Skyhawks. The meeting will be AMU's last against an opponent currently in the top 25 in the regular season. Opening serve against the Skyhawks is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
