Daltons Dominate in Women's Soccer Victory

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria women's soccer team won their second consecutive match to open the season on Tuesday night, blowing past the Conquistadors of Florida National University, 3-0, at Gyrene Field. The Gyrenes thoroughly dominated play, attempting 43 shots over the game's 90 minutes, a total that was one shy of a school record.

AMU took the lead in the 16th minute, as a foul in the box from Florida National led to a Gyrene penalty kick. Senior Emily Dalton stepped to the spot and buried the penalty to give Ave Maria a 1-0 lead. The goal, which marked Dalton's fourth of the season following a hat trick on Saturday, also was Dalton's second consecutive game-winner.

Not to be outdone, Dalton's sister Hannah added to the scoring in the 42nd minute. A pass from freshman Brenda Tubb found Hannah Dalton's foot, and the youngest of AMU's three Dalton sisters blasted a rocket past the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season, as well as the first goal of her collegiate career.

The final of Ave Maria's three goals came from the eldest Dalton, Emily. The senior took aim from more than 35 yards out, and placed a gem in the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. The Venice native is currently one of just two players in The Sun Conference to already have five goals on the season.

Of the 43 shots attempted by the Gyrenes in the victory, 17 challenged the Florida National goalkeeper. Four Gyrenes - Emily Dalton, Hannah Dalton, Tubb, and Haley Iacona - each put three shots on goal, with Emily leading all players with nine total shots. The three Dalton sisters on the roster - Emily, Sarah, and Hannah - combined for all three goals, seven shots on goal, and 20 total shots. Nearly every player that saw action for AMU attempted a shot, with ten of the 15 participating players taking more than one.

Maddie Samuelson earned the first shutout of her Ave Maria career, stopping the only shot on goal attempted by the Conquistadors, which came off the foot of Dominique Mosley in the 36th minute. It was the second career shutout for the Littleton, Colorado native, who played her first two years of college soccer at Hastings College in Nebraska.

With a victory on Saturday, the Gyrenes would be undefeated after three matches for the first time in school history. Standing in the way is conference opponent St. Thomas. The Bobcats currently hold an 0-1 record, with a 5-1 loss to defending national champion Keiser coming in their opener. Kickoff in Ave Maria, which marks the middle game of a tripleheader on the Gyrene Field surface on Saturday, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
