LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team was overwhelmed on Saturday night, falling 6-1 on the road to the Royals of Warner University. Warner scored four goals in the opening frame, then added two in the second half to claim the conference victory at Royals Field.
Warner's four goals in the first half started in the 17th minute, when Dawson Johnson scored on an assist from Deven Ingley. Ingley got on the board himself in the 25th minute, putting one in the back of the net on an assist from Eduardo DaSilva. The final two goals of the half came from DaSilva, who scored in the 32nd and 41st minutes. Bhassakon Songvejkasem earned the assist on DaSilva's first goal, as Warner took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
The Royals also scored the first goal of the second half, taking a 5-0 lead 45 seconds into the frame on a goal from Austyn Brinkley, his third of the season. Just over two minutes later, the Gyrenes gained an 11-on-10 advantage when Warner's Pedro Lorencatto was assessed a red card.
Ave Maria got on the board in the 55th minute, thanks to Josh Gaeng. The sophomore scored his fifth goal of the season to cut the Warner lead down to 5-1. The Royals added the final goal of the night in the 72nd minute, as Ingley scored a shorthanded goal on an assist from Johnson.
The Gyrenes remain in the hunt for a conference tournament berth, and will likely need at least one win in the final two matches in league play to qualify. However, Ave Maria's next contest will come out of conference action, as the Gyrenes host the Suns of Johnson University at Gyrene Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Ave Maria.
