LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Ave Maria University men's soccer team played its first game since Nov. 14 in a 3-1 loss at Warner on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals scored the first goal of the match in the 38
th minute when Ian Brugal pounced on a loose ball in the box and put it away to give Warner a 1-0 advantage that it took into intermission.
Freshman Josh Gaeng headed home a cross from teammate Tomas Licheri in the 55
th minute for the Gyrenes to deadlock the score at 1-1.
Back-to-back goals by Warner followed – first a tally by Dawson Johnson just over four minutes after AMU's lone goal and a second by Johnson on a breakaway at the 89:05 mark to account for the final margin.
Warner outshot Ave Maria 15-11 for the match and attempted six corner kicks to AMU's five.
Freshman Rhys Lawlor played all 90 minutes in net for the Gyrenes and made four saves. Woodlerson Cyrius also made four stops for the Royals.
The defeat drops the Gyrenes' record to 3-11-1. Warner moves to 3-10-1.
The Gyrenes return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 24 vs. Florida National in a 7:30 p.m. ET start at Gyrene Field on the campus of Ave Maria University. The contest will mark AMU's first home match since Nov. 7, 2020.
