MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- The Ave Maria University beach volleyball team won their second consecutive contest on Wednesday evening, defeating the Bobcats of St. Thomas University, 3-2, at the Dominc Miniaci Courts in Miami Gardens. The Gyrenes earned wins at the number two, four, and five spots to earn a victory over the host Bobcats for the second consecutive season.
The top duo to earn a win for the Gyrenes came at the number two spot, as sophomore Victoria Schein teamed with freshman Lily Grasso. The duo, against Arianna Bolinger and Kendall Brock, rallied from a one-set deficit following a 21-15 in the opening frame. Schein and Grasso came back for a 21-16 win in the second set, then put a point on the board for the Gyrenes with a 15-12 triumph in the third set.
AMU's most dominant victory of the evening came at the number four spot, courtesy of Katie O'Donnell and Alejandra Suarez. The juniors picked up a first set win, 21-15, over STU's duo of Taytumn Schlegel Ridgway and Mia Thomas. In the second set, O'Donnell and Suarez rolled to a 21-7 win over the Bobcats to give the Gyrenes another point.
In the number five spot, freshmen Zelie Kessler and Reina Thomas earned a criticial win for the Gyrenes. The pair played the longest set of the night with St. Thomas' Karla Delgado and Ivana Jiron, winning 27-25 in the first set. Kessler and Thomas then put the match away, and earned a point for AMU, with a 21-17 win in the second set.
St. Thomas' victories were provided by Mya Thomas and Hannah Symonds in the number one spot, and Sofia Adorno and Kamden Maas in the number three spot. Thomas and Symonds defeated Miah Pena and Cabriella Bouterse in three sets, while Maas and Adorno picked up a straight sets victory over Katie Grose and Flavia Rusterholz.
Ave Maria will play next in more than two weeks time, concluding The Sun Conference schedule with two matches on Saturday, March 13. The Gyrenes will head to Warner University' campus in Lake Wales, and will play neutral site matches against the Florida Memorial University Lions and the Southeastern University Fire. AMU will face Florida Memorial at 11 a.m., then will end conference play against Southeastern at 2:30 p.m.
