AMU Baseball Drops Doubleheader vs. No. 15 Keiser

Back-to-back setbacks sees Gyrenes record slip to 1-5 overall

AVE MARIA, Fla.  – The Ave Maria University baseball team was defeated 20-0 and 14-4 in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon vs. No. 15 Keiser University at Bowie's Ballpark.

The Seahawks took firm control of the opener from the start as it built a commanding 12-0 advantage over the first two innings, running AMU freshman starter Brandon Diaz out of the game after allowing 12 runs, four earned on six hits.  Diaz also walked a pair and hit three hitters by pitch over the opening two frames.

Keiser added a run in each of the fourth and seventh innings as well as three in both the fifth in sixth innings to secure the victory.

Seahawk starting pitcher James Reynolds picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season after limiting the Gyrenes to no runs and five hits over five innings, along with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

The second game saw Keiser open an early lead once again as it used a seven-run second inning to open an early 8-0 edge that it would not relinquish.  The Seahawks followed a single tally in the first inning with a six-run, five hit second inning which was sparked by three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run by catcher Zach Mazur.

Keiser added five more runs in the fifth and a single run in the seventh to account for its final scoring margin.

The Gyrenes broke through in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs.  Senior Ethan Bergkamp was credited with an RBI after he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Clayton Stanley, who finished the contest with three hits, added the final run for AMU in the third with an RBI single.

AMU trimmed the margin to 14-4 in the bottom of the sixth when junior Wilfredo Acevedo blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall.

The Gyrenes return to the diamond next weekend with a three-game series against Webber International University beginning on Friday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. EST.  The three-game set will be played at Bowie's Ballpark on the campus of Ave Maria University.
