Gyrene Men’s Tennis Cruises to Fourth Straight Win

AMU hands Bethel (Minn.) 6-1 setback in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ave Maria University men's tennis team posted a 6-1 win on Wednesday over Bethel (Minn.) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, extending its current winning streak to four matches overall.

The Gyrenes swept all three doubles matches and each of the top five singles clashes en route to the victory.  AMU currently stands at 4-4 overall on the season and is receiving the 31st-most votes in the most recent NAIA national rankings.

Luca Cirenza and Nicholas Hofmeister opened the match with an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 doubles slot, before Alejandro Viedma and Carlos Thireau posted an 8-4 win at No. 2.
 
The No. 3 AMU duo of Guilherme Bento and Felipe Amorim registered an identical 8-4 outcome to clinch the tandem sweep.

Bento outlasted Bethel's Erik Beckers in the No. 1 singles slowdown by claiming the tiebreaker in decisive fashion at 10-4 after splitting the two sets 6-3, 4-6.

Hofmeister was dominant in the No. 2 slot, blanking Zach Kantor 6-0, 6-0.  Cirenza was nearly as in control playing at No. 3 as he recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jason Reilly. 

AMU's Thireau defeated Tyler Creelman 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 Michael Myrtil won the tiebreaker 10-5 after splitting 6-3 sets with Jacob Lukkarila to close out the singles winners for the Gyrenes.

The AMU men's tennis team returns to Sun Conference action on Monday, March 22 at No. 25 Southeastern (Fla.) University beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
