No. 20 Women’s Tennis Defeats Bethel (Minn.) For Fifth Win in Last Six Matches

Gyrenes Post 5-2 win after sweeping doubles matches

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 20 nationally-ranked Ave Maria women's tennis team posted a 5-2 win over Bethel (Minn.) on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando – its fifth victory over its last six matches overall.

The Gyrenes swept all three matches to capture the doubles point and followed with victories in four of the six singles battles to secure the win and run their overall season record to 6-3.

The No. 1 tandem of Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto had a tough battle against Bethel's Grace Riermann and Maggie Riermann before holding on for an 8-7 triumph. 

AMU's Gabrielle Benn and Kely Oliveira handled Mackenzie Novak and Sydney Rott in the No. 2 slot by an 8-6 count and Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom closed out the sweep with a convincing 8-1 win at No. 3.

Singles play saw Teodoro defeat Grace Riemann 7-6, 7-6 in the No. 1 singles match.  Candiotto dropped a tough showdown at No. 2 by an 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 margin to Maggie Riermann and Benn slipped by a 6-2, 7-5 score at No. 3 against Novak.

The Gyrenes then rallied as Kelkboom ripped off a 6-1, 6-3 decision to claim the No. 4 singles match over Ingrid Goldstrand and Oliveira followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sydney Rott at No. 5.

Fuller defeated Rylee Schurman 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 to close out the team match victory.

The Gyrenes are back at it on Monday, March 22 for a Sun Conference match at No. 20 Southeastern slated for a 1 p.m. EDT start.
