Women's Tennis Dominates in Win over Judson

ORLANDO, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team continued rolling on Tuesday afternoon, winning their third straight match against a non-conference foe. The Gyrenes swept the Eagles of Judson University, 5-0, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, their third sweep in a row. The match was played to the clinching match, although the Gyrenes did hold commanding leads in the two matches that ended up unfinished.

AMU's nationally ranked duo of Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto rolled to a win at the number one spot, topping Sofia Corona Garza and Lizeth Medina Diaz 6-1. The number two team of Kely Oliveira and Gabrielle Benn also won in decisive fashion with a 6-2 triumph over Judson's Hailey Haws and Caroline Johnson. The most dominant win came from Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom, who shut out Judson's Samantha Brackenrig and Katelynn Coleman, 6-0.

The Gyrenes continued to dominate during singles play, surrendering just one point in the first two matches to finish. Aethielle Kelkboom did not give up any points in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Caroline Johnson at the number four spot. Katie Fuller nearly equalled that feat, claiming a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katelynn Coleman at the number six position. The wins by Kelkboom and Fuller gave AMU a 3-0 lead overall, one point away from the win.

Two matches finished at nearly the same time, giving the Gyrenes an extra point before the match could be considered official. Gabrielle Benn topped Hailey Haws at the number three spot with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Kely Oliveira only dropped two points in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Grace Nguyen at the number five position.

At the top two spots, Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto were both primed to claim singles victories, but their matches were unfinished when the match was called at 5-0. Both players had won their first set by a 6-2 score, and were two points away from winning the match.

Ave Maria will play their fifth consecutive neutral site contest on Friday afternoon, stepping up to face an NCAA Division II opponent. The Gyrenes will take on the Timberwolves of Northwood University, who are travelling to Florida from the state of Michigan. The match, which will again take place at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. opening serve.
