AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team continued the best season in school history on Saturday afternoon with a dominant victory over the Warner University Royals. The win set a program record with the team's ninth win of the season, and was Ave Maria's fifth win in a row. The Gyrenes have beaten Warner 7-0 in back-to-back seasons, following six consecutive losses to the Royals dating back to the 2014 season.
Warner dressed just five players for the match, so the Gyrenes claimed a win by default at the number three doubles position. AMU rolled to the win in the other two doubles matches to easily take the doubles point from the Royals.Â
The nationally ranked duo of Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto cruised to a 6-1 win at the number one spot, and the team of Gabrielle Benn and Amarlia Benn easily defeated Danieris Santiago and Ellie Burningham, 6-3, at the second position.
In the five singles matches contested - Ave Maria was given one point due to default at the number six position - Warner managed just eight points, with six coming in one match. Two Gyrenes completely swept their matches with 6-0, 6-0 victories. The first came from nationally-ranked Lara Teodoro, who dominated Marla Montoya at the number one spot. Then, fellow Brazilian Kely Oliveira earned a sweep over Savannah Hancock at the number five spot.
Also earning dominant singles wins were Gabrielle Benn and Aethielle Kelkboom. Benn added to her doubles win with her sister with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the number three singles spot, while Kelkboom dropped just one point in a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fourth spot over Ellie Burningham. The closest match of the day came at the number two spot, which was still a straight set win for Ave Maria. Candiotto toppled Irene Arias, 6-4, 6-2, in the match that clinched victory for the Gyrenes.
The final match of the regular season will have huge ramifications for the postseason for Ave Maria, as the Gyrenes challenge the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Bees of SCAD-Savannah. Both teams enter the match with a 4-1 record in Sun Conference team, and the winner will enter The Sun Conference Tournament as the number two seed.Â
The match, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts in Savannah, will also serve as a preview of the semifinals of The Sun Conference Tournament two weeks later.
