AMU Baseball Falls in Doubleheader vs. No. 2 Southeastern

Gyrenes honor 2021 senior class prior to twin bill

AVE MARIA, Fla.  – The Ave Maria University baseball team dropped a pair of games vs. No. 2 Southeastern (Fla.) University on Saturday afternoon at Bowie's Ballpark, in the final two games of the Gyrenes' 2021 campaign.

AMU lost a 12-1 decision in the opener, before falling 7-1 in game two.  The Gyrenes close out the season 16-32 overall.

Southeastern opened up an early 9-0 edge in game with – on the strength of a three-run second and six-run fourth.  Colton Onstott drilled a solo homer to right field to open the scoring in the second, before a Gyrene error and an RBI single by Carter Bridge upped the lead to 3-0.

Pedro Castellano did the bulk of the damage for the Fire in the fourth with a three-run blast to right field.

Nick Bottari ripped an RBI double and Onstott drove home another run on a single in the fifth for Southeastern.  Bridge recordd his second run-scoring hit with a single in the sixth that made the score 12-0.

AMU finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when senior Brody Rubenstein led off the inning with a triple to deep center field and scored on a wild pitch.

The second game was tightly contested until Southeastern broke it open late.  Shamir Morales and Anthony Carrera each recorded RBI base hits in the second inning to give the Fire a 2-0 advantage.

Senior Tyler Chase trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth that plated Rubenstein.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Gyrenes would get as Southeastern would go on to score the final five runs of the contest to secure the victory.

Prior to the contest, AMU honored its three members of the 2021 senior class, Chase, Ethan Bergkamp and Christian Whitlatch.
