Cross Country Again Sweeps SUN Awards

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University cross country program swept The Sun Conference's weekly awards on Monday, as announced by the league office. Senior Mary Goetz was named the female Runner of the Week for the second time this season, while sophomore Joseph Perreault earned AMU's third male Runner of the Week award of the season. Ave Maria has now earned five of the eight Runner of the Week awards given out this season.

Goetz picks up her second Runner of the Week honor this season, doing so for the first time after the STU XC Invitational in Miami Gardens. The senior has now been named the conference Runner of the Week five times in her Gyrene career- three times in her freshman season of 2018, and twice in 2021.

Goetz was Ave Maria's top female runner in a field of more than 150, finishing in the top half of the field at Notre Dame. The senior completed the 5k Notre Dame course in 20:15.3. She was the lone Ave Maria runner to place among the top 100 runners, placing 66th among the 181 runners that started the race. Goetz continued her streak of being Ave Maria's top runner, as she has finished first among Gyrenes in every race of her collegiate career.

Perreault is the third Gyrene to earn the weekly honor, as an AMU runner has been Runner of the Week following each of the team's races. Jackson Pope was the SUN Runner of the Week after the STU XC Invitational, while Adam Paga was the top runner in the conference following the MGA Invitational. The honor is the first of Perreault's career at Ave Maria.

On the men's side at Notre Dame, the Gyrenes had their third different top finisher in as many weeks. Sophomore and reigning First Team All-Sun Conference selection Joseph Perreault was the first AMU runner across the line at Notre Dame, crossing the finish line at 27:55.9. Perreault was Ave Maria's lone runner to break the 28-minute mark, which earned him Ave Maria's best individual finish of the day at 59th in a field of 164.

After three races away from home, the Gyrenes will get to run on their home course this weekend. The Ave Maria Invitational, which is beng held for the second year in a row, will be run at North Park in Ave Maria. The runners will kick off the action at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
