Women's Soccer Surges Late, Rolls FMU

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — The Ave Maria University women's soccer team earned their first SUN Conference win Saturday, beating the Florida Memorial Lions 6-1. The Gyrenes dominated all game, outshooting the Lions 51-4 with 28 of those shots on goal. The six goals also marked  the most goals in a game for AMU this season.

In the first half, Ave Maria stayed on the attack most of the time. The Gyrenes registered 13 shots on goal while not allowing any from Florida Memorial. AMU scored their first goal in the 18th minute when Rachel Morgan got a breakaway and slid the ball past the FMU goalie.

Just three minutes later, the Gyrenes struck again with Madelyn Krause setting up Kaitlyn Ramos right in front of the net; Ramos knocked the ball in to give Ave Maria a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the Gyrenes continued to put pressure on Florida Memorial's defense but couldn't get the ball in the net for the first 35 minutes. The Lions, however, did cut the deficit down to one with just 12 minutes left to play in the game.

Fortunately, the Gyrenes were able to put the game away in the last ten minutes, scoring four unanswered goals. In the 80th minute, Alyssa Stewart scored her first goal of the season to give the Gyrenes their two-goal lead back. 80 seconds later, Lilia Linders also scored her first goal of the season and put Ave Maria up by three. Only two minutes passed before AMU got back on the scoreboard with Krause setting up Ramos again for the pairing's second goal of the game. With just 45 seconds left on the clock, Ave Maria struck one more time for good measure with Caylee Feskanin becoming the third Gyrene to score her first goal of the season Saturday.

The 51 shots attempted was the most shots attempted in Gyrene history, passing the previous high of 45.

With the win, Ave Maria improves to 4-3-4 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play. The Gyrenes' next game is Monday, October 17, against the 12th ranked SCAD Bees at Gyrene Field. This is a makeup of a game originally scheduled for October 1 but was postponed due to Hurricane Ian. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and will be broadcasted on the SUN Digital Network.
