Women's Soccer Logs Seventh Shutout in Draw

LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team posted their seventh shutout of the season Tuesday evening, but could not find a goal of their own in a scoreless draw with the Warner University Royals in Lake Wales. The draw kept Ave Maria's hopes to make the postseason within the realm of possibility, but AMU can longer control their own destiny.

Ave Maria was the more aggressive team in the first half, outshooting the Royals 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes. Four different Gyrenes had attempts on the goal in the first half, but shots by Brenda Tubb, Nina Laville, Gabby Decker, and Lilia Linders were all turned away by Warner goalie Cora Perez. Maddie Samuelson matched Perez's effort with two early saves of her own, sending the match to halftime scoreless.

Neither team attempted a shot on goal in the first 16 minutes of the second half, and both teams would eventually launch seven shots in the final frame. Ave Maria was again the more active team around the net, recording two more shots from Linders, one more from Laville, and one from Liz Wolf. All four were turned away, but Samuelson kept the Royals off the board with three saves of her own, ending the match in a draw.

AMU ended the match with more shots, both total and on goal. The Gyrenes attempted 15 shots, with eight challenging the Warner goalkeeper. Lilia Linders was Ave Maria's most active attacker on the day, attempting three shots on goal. Liz Wolf added four total shots, with only one, coming in the xth minute, going on goal. Multiple shots were also attempted by Tubb, Decker, Laville, and Madelyn Krause.

In goal, Maddie Samuelson earned her fifth shutout of the season, tying the school record she set last season. It was also the tenth shutout of her career at Ave Maria, extending her existing school record. Through 12 games, Samuelson has a goals against average of 0.89, and would break another school record for season goals against average should she allow two or fewer goals in 90 minutes against Keiser.

The draw keeps the Gyrenes' hopes for a Sun Conference Tournament bid alive, but the Gyrenes will now need help around the conference to qualify for the league tournament. The Gyrenes can help their case with a win or a draw against top-ranked Keiser on Saturday, but would still remain contingent on results featuring St. Thomas and Warner. Kickoff for Ave Maria's regular season finale against the Seahawks in West Palm Beach is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
