AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria University men's soccer team lost their final game of the season, losing to the SCAD Bees 4-1. It was senior day at Gyrene Field, and all six seniors; Cedric Georges, Luis Ortiz, Ian Fox, Joseph Kaminski, Ian Wall, and John Ielmini, were in the starting lineup, with three of them, Kaminski, Wall, and Ielmini making their first start of the season.
The game got off to a fast start, with three goals being scored in the first 12 minutes of the game. SCAD opened the scoring around the seventh minute with Ethan Brooks cashing in on a nice pass from Lewis Gamble. The Gyrenes evened it up less than two minutes later when Ortiz was granted a penalty kick after Juan Parra had the wind knocked out of him inside the Bees goal box. Ortiz's shot was initially blocked by SCAD's goal Connor Friel but squirted out under his arm and crossed the goal line to tie it up for the Gyrenes.
The tie unfortunately did not last long as SCAD regained the lead just a few minutes later on a shot from David Temmel. That was all the scoring that would happen in the first half, and the Bees took a 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Gyrenes had looks at the net, but could not covert them to goals. The Bees, on the other hand, add to their lead, scoring at the start of the half and in the final ten minutes.
With the loss, the Gyrenes end the 2022 season with a 4-10 record and 0-8 in conference play. Despite the losing record, Ave Maria saw some new individual records get challenged this year. Parra set the record for most assists in a single season with eight while Josh Gaeng tied for the second most goals in a single season with 11 and now has sole possession of most goal in a career at Ave Maria with 22.
