Women's Hoops Blasts UVI in Home Opener

AVE MARIA, FLA.- The Ave Maria University women's basketball team dominated in their home opener against the Virgin Islands Buccaneers, winning 90-51 at Donahue Gym Saturday afternoon. The Gyrenes only scored over 90 points twice last season but have posted back-to-back 90s to start the 2022-23 season.

The Gyrenes opened strong, starting the game off with a 10-0 run in the first four minutes of the game. The run was capped off by back-to-back threes from Casey Humphrey and Gianna Santacroce before a media timeout. Following the timeout, AMU continued to overpower the Buccaneers, and led 24-9 after the first quarter.

The second quarter started much like the first with Ave Maria going on another 10-0 run that was punctuated by another Humphrey three. The Gyrenes hit six three-pointers in the first half while the Buccaneers, on the other end, went 0-for-5. Ave Maria put up another 24 points in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 48-20.

In the third quarter, Ave Maria had their best quarter yet, scoring 25 points. The Gyrenes hit three three-pointers in the quarter and outrebounded UVI 14-5. The Bucs scored 13 points of their own, and the score was 73-33 heading into the final ten minutes. Ave Maria cruised in the final quarter and hit two more three-pointers to beat the Buccaneers by a final score of 90-51.

The Gyrenes finished the game shooting 47% from the field and 11-for-30 from three-point land for a percentage of 37%. Ave Maria had four players score in double digits with Humphrey, Santacroce and Allison Fifield all scoring ten points and Catie Reszel leading the team with 11 points.

With the win, the Gyrenes start the season off 2-0. Their next couple of games will be November 4-5 as a part of the Southern States Athletic Conference/SUN Conference Challenge. The Gyrenes will play the Brewton-Parker Barons on Friday and the Middle Georgia Knights on Saturday. Ave Maria stays on the road after that to open conference play with the Webber Warriors before coming back home November 12 to host the Southeastern Fire.
