LEXINGTON, Ky.- Two Ave Maria University volleyball players earned AVCA All-Region honors, as announced Friday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Senior outside hitter Cabriella Bouterse was selected as a first team honoree, while Madelyn Haut earned honorable mention recognition. The AVCA All-Region teams are chosen by the NAIA Selection Committee.
For AVCA All-Region honors, the nation is split into ten regions, with 14 student-athletes named first team All-Region and eight named honorable mention per region. Ave Maria, along with all members of The Sun Conference, are in the Southeast Region.
Friday's selections marks the fourth consecutive season with at least one Gyrene on the All-Region team, and the third consecutive season with multiple players. Both Bouterse and Haut are making return trips to the All-Region teams: Bouterse was a first team selection in 2020, while Haut earned first team accolades following both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Cabriella Bouterse continued to be one of the most feared hitters in the conference, recording 286 kills with an attack percentage of .323, totals that both ranked in the SUN's top five and the top ten in Ave Maria history. The senior also added 45 blocks to help AMU's defensive efforts. Bouterse, a three-time first team All-Sun Conference honoree, finished her AMU career third in kills with 762, despite playing just three years in Ave Maria. Her 137 career blocks also ranked in the top ten in school history.
Madelyn Haut concluded one of the most prolific careers in AMU volleyball history with her third All-Region selection, as well as her fourth first team All-Sun Conference selection, both of which are program records. Haut led the Sun Conference with a hitting percentage of .348, and now holds Ave Maria's career records in blocks and kills after posting 91 total blocks and 245 kills during the 2022 season.
The Gyrenes were one of just three Sun Conference teams with multiple All-Region selections, joining conference champion St. Thomas and Keiser. The SUN also won four of the seven overall awards in the Southeast Region, including Player of the Year, Attacker of the Year, Defender of the Year, and Setter of the Year.
Ave Maria finished the 2022 season with a 19-6 record, including an 11-3 mark in Sun Conference play. The Gyrenes finished in the top two of the SUN regular season standings for the third year in a row, and moved their record at home over the past three seasons to 25-2.
