Men's Tennis Dominates Mount Vernon Nazarene

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team was thoroughly dominant on Tuesday afternoon, surrendering just four points total in a 7-0 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on the Ave Maria campus. All nine matches were won by the Gyrenes, with no Mount Vernon Nazarene player winning more than one point in a given match.

All three doubles matches were won decisively by the Gyrenes, with all three teams winning by the same 6-1 score. Fernando Orihuela and Sebastian Grijalva continued their stint as AMU's most successful doubles team to date, winning 6-1 over MVNU's Andrew Hare and Carter Jones. Teaming together for the second time, Felipe Amorim and Bruno Duarte earned a win at the number two spot, while the team of Adriel Bousquet and Graham Gibbs earned their first win of the year at the third position.

Each of the top five players in the Gyrene lineup swept their matches against Mount Vernon Nazarene. Bruno Duarte earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Justin Haggard, while Fernando Orihuela did the same against the Cougars' Ben Kindberg to earn his ninth win of the season, a team-high. The win at the number three spot was provided by Sebastian Grijalva, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Andrew Hare.

Three other Gyrenes earned their first victories of the spring in the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions. Felipe Amorim won for the first time this season with his own 6-0, 6-0 win, coming against MVNU's Carter Jones. Adriel Bousquet also won in his first match of the spring with a shutout win over Austin Faucett. A 6-0, 6-1 win from Graham Gibbs in his first dual match rounded out Ave Maria's third win of the 2022 season.

An exhibition game is next on the schedule for the Gyrenes, who will head north for a meeting with NCAA Division III Piedmont University. Regular season competition resumes on Saturday, as Ave Maria hosts SCAD-Savannah in a crucial Sun Conference match, AMU's last for three weeks. Tuesday's match was the first of four this week for the Gyrenes, who will conclude the week by taking on Eastern Nazarene University from Massachusetts on Sunday.
