Five Gyrenes Earn First Spring Wins in Sweep

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team rolled their way to a win on Tuesday afternoon, winning nine straight matches in a 7-0 victory over the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University at the AMU Tennis Complex. Five different Gyrenes won their first dual match of the season, with one, Abigail Rich, earning her first collegiate victory in the sweep. 

The Gyrenes' nationally ranked doubles duo of Lara Teodoro and Vitoria Barandas got the Gyrenes going in doubles action, winning 6-3 over MVNU's top duo of Hannah Fugate and Hailey Clayborn. Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom won at the number two spot with a 6-2 victory over Casey Clark and Audrey Cochran, while Nicolle Koop and Kely Oliveira finished off the doubles sweep with a 6-1 win over the Cougars' Emily Allison and Laurel Sidle.

Lara Teodoro led the singles effort for the Gyrenes with a sweep, 6-0, 6-0, over Hailey Clayborn. The other five Gyrenes earned their first wins of the spring, as Ave Maria shook up the lineup entering the match. Kely Oliveira picked up the win at the number two spot, beating Casey Clark 6-1, 6-0. At the third position, Nicolle Koop won 6-0, 6-0 over Hannah Fugate. 

Freshman Ellie Hire won her first dual match of the spring, dominating Mount Vernon Nazarene's Audrey Cochran, 6-1, 6-0. Katie Fuller got her first singles opportunity of the spring, and made the most of it with a 6-0, 6-0 win. The final match of the day, which drew the entirety of both teams to the neighboring court for its conclusion, saw freshman Abigail Rich earn her first collegiate victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sarah Young. 

An exhibition game is next on the schedule for the Gyrenes, who will head north for a meeting with NCAA Division III Piedmont University. Regular season competition resumes on Saturday, as Ave Maria hosts SCAD-Savannah in a crucial Sun Conference match, AMU's last for three weeks. The Bees enter the match ranked fourth in the nation, with a 6-1 overall record. Opening serve in Ave Maria is scheduled for noon.
