Men's Tennis Sweeps FNU on Senior Day

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team concluded their regular season on Tuesday afternoon, easily dispatching the Florida National University Conquistadors, 7-0, at the AMU Tennis Complex. Before the matchup against the Conquistadors, who were receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll, the AMU tennis program, currently ranked in the top 15 in the nation on both the men's and women's sides, recognized and honored its graduating seniors.

Ave Maria swept the doubles matches will relative ease, as the Conquistadors' three pairs managed just seven total points. Nick Hofmeister and Gustavo Cruz earned a 6-4 win at the top spot, while Guilherme Bento and Carlos Thireau picked up a 6-3 victory at the number three position. The most dominant win was provided by Fernando Orihuela and Sebastian Grijalva, who swept their opponents at the second doubles spot.

It was mostly the same story in singles play, with all 12 sets going the way of the Gyrenes. Gustavo Cruz led the way with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the top spot. In his final match on the AMU courts, senior Nicholas Hofmeister was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Guido Gentile. Bruno Duarte earned a win at the third position, defeating FNU's Alan Schmidt by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

AMU's bottom three singles player continued the stellar play, beginning with a win by Fernando Orihuela at the number four spot. The Argentinian was Ave Maria's most dominant player on the day, surrendering just two points in a 6-2, 6-0 win. Sebastian Grijalva was victorious at the number five spot, winning 6-3, 6-3, and Carlos Thireau wrapped up the sweep over one of the nation's top 40 teams with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Dario Bustruc.

The win over Florida National marked the end of the regular season for AMU, as Ave Maria finishes with an 11-5 record, including an undefeated record on their home courts. The Gyrenes will be the number two seed in the SUN Championships later this month, and will take on third-seeded Southeastern University, who is also nationally ranked, in the semifinals in Brunswick, on the campus of the College of Coastal Georgia.
