Women's Tennis Gets Senior Day Sweep

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team concluded their regular season on Tuesday afternoon, picking up a decisive win over the Florida National University Conquistadors, 7-0, at the AMU Tennis Complex. Before the matchup against the Conquistadors, who were receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll, the AMU tennis program, currently ranked in the top 15 in the nation on both the men's and women's sides, recognized and honored its graduating seniors.

Ave Maria's second and third doubles teams provided the Gyrenes with the doubles point, and did so in dominant fashion. Andrea Rodriguez Oria and Julia Candiotto won 6-1 at the second position, and Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom did the same at the third spot. Despite a win by FNU's Sofia Pera and Pirada Suwanruk at the number one spot, Ave Maria took the initial point of the match, and would continue that momentum in singles play.

With the exception of a three-set match at the number one spot, the Gyrenes thoroughly dominated singles play, with no Conquistador outside of their top player winning more than three points in a single set. The closest match came at the top spot, which saw Lara Teodoro rally from a 6-4 loss in the first set to take the second, 6-0, then win the tiebreaker in the third set, 10-4. With the win, Teodoro won her first singles match since March 1.

AMU's final five singles players rolled from there. Julia Candiotto was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at the second spot, while Valentine Colin surrendered just one point in her 6-1, 6-0 win at the third position. Andrea Rodriguez Oria swept her match, 6-0, 6-0, and Vitoria Barandas claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win in the fifth flight. Senior Kely Oliveira wrapped up Senior Day with a 6-3, 6-2 win in her match.

The win over Florida National marked the end of the regular season for AMU, as Ave Maria finishes with an 10-5 record, including two wins over other teams ranked in the national top 15 in Middle Georgia State and SCAD-Savannah.

The Gyrenes finish in a tie for third place in The Sun Conference, and will miss out on The Sun Conference Tournament due to tiebreakers. Nonetheless, the Gyrenes are still considered potential qualifiers for the NAIA Championships in May, but will wait on the completion of conference tournaments for news on their postseason fate.
