Tournament Run Ends for Lacrosse

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Ave Maria University lacrosse team could not recapture the magic of Thursday night in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament, falling 18-4 to the Keiser University Seahawks on the campus of the University of the Cumberlands. The defending national champion Seahawks advance to Saturday's championship game against host Cumberlands, who advanced with a 13-12 win over Life in double overtime.

Keiser, who cruised to a win in the first round of tournament before Ave Maria's dramatic, emotional upset of Georgetown, scored the first 13 goals of the afternoon, keeping AMU off the board until the 3:43 mark of the third quarter. After AMU's first goal, the Seahawks would add five more in the final 16 minutes to account for their 18 goals.

Ave Maria got on the board with just under four minutes to go in the third, as Abigail Seiler scored her 33rd goal of the season on an assist from Emma Baughman. The Gyrenes also scored the final three goals of the afternoon, coming in the season's final seven minutes.

Claire Ichniowski scored her ninth goal of the season on Hannah Shaffrey's record-shattering 25th assist, while Emma Davis capped the greatest single season in program history with her 53rd goal, adding to her single season records in both goals and points. Seiler finished the scoring with her second tally of the day, which came in the final minute.

Kaylee Wesolowski made eleven saves in net for the Gyrenes, bringing her season total to 126 and making her just the second player in school history with 125 saves in a single season. Seiler also added to another school record, scooping up nine draw controls to finish the season with 98. Seiler, Wesolowski, and Orianna Eldridge all had three ground balls to lead AMU defensively.

The Gyrenes' six wins in 2022 marks the second-highest total in program history, second only to the national tournament qualifiers from 2017. Ave Maria also won three conference games (including the conference tournament), which also ties a program record. Nearly every single season record was broken or challenged during the 2022 season, which marked the first for head coach Shelby Sanderson.
